Sherry Olsen – Punch List

Sherry Olsen: Punch List

Join us for the opening of Punch List, a new show at the Accordion Shop featuring ceramic sculptures and jewelry by Berkeley-based artist Sherry Olsen. For years, Olsen has been a creative explorer, picking up art-making on the road and developing her multi-medium practice through experimentation. She allows these different processes—be it printmaking, metalworking, or glassblowing—to have a dialogue and expand the way she engages with every material she handles.

Come celebrate with us on May 7, with a very special pop-up bar by local favorites Horsies Market.

Sherry Olsen: I was born in Los Angeles and grew up in the Jimmy Carter 70’s, when ecology and making do were part of everyday life. My father was a carpenter, and my mother and grandfather, both latent artists, encouraged me to make things. I did well in school but disliked it, so as soon as I could, I left to travel and learned on the road. It can sound romantic: I did printmaking in Hamburg, glasswork in Paris, metalwork in Ireland. But the less romantic version is just as true. Living in Paris on a single bread pudding a day because it was the cheapest food I could find wasn’t romantic. Both versions are part of me, and both have shaped my work.
My process is rooted in experimentation and a kind of self-forgetting. I’m drawn to what happens when materials meet—printmaking influencing clay, clay influencing textiles. I love Art Brut, folk art, and especially the art of children. I hope my work carries that same spirit: simple and honest and alive.
