500 Capp Street is pleased to announce its annual International Artist Exhibition Open Call, welcoming applications from artists based in the United States and around the world. With generous multi-year support from the Sanger Family Foundation, the program supports artists in developing ambitious exhibition projects that foster experimentation, artistic exchange, and meaningful public engagement. International artists are especially encouraged to apply.

Located in San Francisco, 500 Capp Street is the historic home and living sculpture of conceptual artist David Ireland. The program invites artists working across disciplines and mediums to engage with the house as a site of artistic inquiry, experimentation, and exchange. We are particularly interested in practices that challenge conventional boundaries between art and everyday life, explore relationships between material, space, and ideas, and propose new ways of engaging with the public.

The selected artist will develop an exhibition at 500 Capp Street in Summer 2027, accompanied by opportunities for public programming, dialogue, and collaboration. Projects may take the form of installations, interventions, sculpture, performance, research-based practices, or interdisciplinary approaches. Artists are encouraged to consider the unique architectural, historical, and conceptual context of the house while bringing their own perspectives and artistic inquiries to the project.

The selected artist will have access to the Paule Anglim Archive Room and David Ireland Archive and Papers, a time capsule of Bay Area Conceptual Art (1975-2009), and will work closely with curator Lian Ladia and the 500 Capp Street team throughout the development and realization of the exhibition. An onsite residency at the house may be arranged when it meaningfully supports the artist’s practice and proposed project in consideration that the house is a living sculpture.

The selected artist will receive:

  • Up to $10,000 toward exhibition production, fabrication, research, public program and travel
