Land as Monument <> Self as Monument

Join artist Tricia Rainwater for an evocative sunset poetry reading on Thursday, October 9 at 6:30 PM—a celebration of living monuments that honor Indigenous experiences. As an Indigiqueer femme, Rainwater’s work is deeply rooted in the intertwined relationships of land, body, and self. She sees her body as an extension of the landscape and a vessel for exploration, using self-portrait photography and sculptural practices to create spaces that hold grief, revisit wounds, and nurture healing.

Over the past year, her evolving journey—marked by personal loss and profound transformation—has become a narrative of resilience, inviting quiet moments of reflection on how we commemorate and connect with our past. This reading invites poets to share their reflections on reimagining monumentality, centering real lives and lived histories rather than static memorials, especially as Indigenous Peoples’ Day approaches.

This program is part of Shaping Legacy: San Francisco Monuments & Memorials, a project of SFAC supported by funding from the Mellon Foundation.
